Let's Chat Zero TBR
I have been doing a lot of research on the idea of a zero TBR. I have been working on my goodreads TBR since I started this blog. I have always said I wanted to reduce the number on my list, but I have never set a definite goal and therefore I have failed every year to truly reduce the number of books on my list.
Here's the thing I have been reading books off the list. I just have been adding more books than I can possibly read. I read roughly 50-60 books a year there is no way I'm going to finish a TBR of 400. With this idea of a Zero TBR in mind I want to take a more proactive approach to reducing my Goodreads TBR.
Let me first off start by clearly stating this does not mean I will have significantly less books on my goodreads TBR. I'm still going to add books to the list throughout the year. I'm still going to use the list the way I always have to keep track of books I want to read. The strategies I talk about in this post are going to help me to narrow down the number of books on my TBR and hopefully read some of the books that have long been forgotten.
First let's start with some stats. I have been keeping track of how my TBR has grown and changed for the past three years. I started with all the books that were on my list in 2014. Off that list I have read 69 and deleted 40 books. Off my original 2015 list I have read 38 books and deleted 33 books. Off my original 2016 list I have read 22 books and deleted 7 books. I do read books off the list and the books do change over the years. Through blogging I have discovered so many favorite authors.
Below are my goals of how I'm going to reduce my Goodreads TBR this year.
1. I'm starting the year off with 394 books on my list. That is going to be my number throughout the whole year. Any new books added to the list won't be counted towards the reduction. I may have a similar amount of books on my shelf next year. I think it is hard to truly see progress when I'm always adding books to the shelf. I'm going to focus on shrinking only the number of books that I have on my list as of 2017.
2. My TBR List: I will be using this meme in a different way this year. I will be choosing books out of my Deal Me In/ Fill in the Gaps challenge. All the books for this challenge are backlist and books that I want to read. I'm going to try to read a lot of the books for this challenge.
3. Read Books off My Own Shelves: I'm going to try to read more books that I already own and try not to buy many new books unless I plan to read them soon after I buy them
4. Delete: here is the deal I hate deleting books off my TBR, but I have to. Some of the books have been on the list since 2012 when I joined Goodreads. If I haven't read them at this point I'm probably not going to. Unless they are by a favorite author I'm going to start getting rid of books. The great thing is this is just a digital list and I have not invested money in all of these books.
5. Overall I want to continue to read the books that I want to read and not be concerned about the TBR list. I think that my TBR serves its purpose to keep track of books I want to read and I should be worried about reading every single book on the list because it isn't possible.
6. All About the Books has a wonderful spreadsheet that she creates every year. I didn't use it in 2017, but I'm planning to return in 2018 because it keeps track of my TBR for me. I also have my TBR spreadsheet I created that I keep track of how my TBR grows and changes. I'm excited to continue to use that this year.
Last year I had 82 books on the TBR. This year I have 95 books on the TBR. I think I did good reading the books I bought this year, but I didn't read books that I have had for a long time. The 2nd stack from the right is all the books I have bought in 2017. I would say I bought more books than usual, but I got most of them 2nd hand and pretty cheap. 2018 is the year I'm going to focus on my TBR this year and get the number of books unread down.

Top Ten Tuesday: 2013, 2014, and 2015 Releases I Still Need to Read
Here is my update for 2013, 2014, and 2015 releases I meant to read, but didn't. I said that I was going to remove the 2013 releases from the list because usually I would combine the previous year's list with this one, but the 2016 list was just too big to combine with this one. I don't have many 2013 releases left, so I hope to finish a lot of them this year and then next year I will have room for the 2016 releases to combine on this list. I'm very proud of the progress I have made with this list. I started 2017 with 22 books and I'm starting 2018 with 16 books on the list.
Off my original 2013 list I have read The Beginning of Everything by Robin Scheider, Five Summers by Una LaMarche, Sold for Endless Rue by Madeline E. Robins, The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle, Just One Day by Gayle Forman, This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith, and My Name is Rapunzel by KC Hilton.

Series 2018
This will be my fifth year posting my series goals for the year. You can check out my Series 2014, Series 2015, Series 2016, and Series 2017 2017 was another year where I mostly read standalones, but I also finished some series that have been on this list since 2014, so I'm proud of that. I still have a number of series I'm in the middle of and as always series I would like to start, but haven't.
Series I have Started, But Haven't Finished
Once Upon a Time by Various Authors- I read Golden and Sunlight and Shadow in 2014. I read The Wild Orchid and Before Midnight in 2017. I really have enjoyed all the books I have read in this series.
The War that Saved my Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley- This duology was the best thing that came out of my student teaching experience. I was in my sped student teaching and we went into the classroom with a student and the 6th grade reading teacher was reading this to his class. I had missed the beginning, but I was so interested in the book. I read the first book as an audiobook and I fell in love with The War that Saved my Life. It is by far my favorite book of the year. I read it back in January and I have been singing its praises all year long. I just read The War I Finally Won and it was a great book also. I read it within a span of four days and it was equally amazing as the first book. This is a great series and if I could recommend any series to my readers it would be this series.
Series I have Started, But Haven't Finished
Hundred Oaks Series by Miranda Kenneally- I read the last book in this series, Coming up for Air when I recieved it for review. It was fine to read the last book first because each book in the series is about a different character. I'm hoping to read the rest of the books in the series this year.
Castle Glower by Jessica Day George- I didn't read any more in this series last year, but I probably will return to it this year. They are quick reads so it is a series I hope to finish.
Faerie Tale Collection by Jenni James- I read The Twelve Dancing Princesses, Rapunzel, and The Little Mermaid in 2017. The author is still adding books to the series, so I will not complete the series this year, but I hope to catch up with the series in 2018.
Fangirl & Carry On by Rainbow Rowell- Rainbow Rowell wrote the companion novel to Fangirl in 2015. I had this on my TBR several times in 2016, but never managed to read it. Hopefully I will in 2018.
Just One Day by Gayle Forman- I read Just One Day in April for Dewey's readathon. I'm hoping to get to Just One Year early in 2018 to finish off the duology.
Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery- I started the Anne of Green Gables series in 2017. This is a series I have wanted to read for awhile despite never publishing it on the blog. This series brought back a lot of nostalgia of watching the show on PBS as a kid. There is also a new series on Netflix that I'm watching and loving. I read the first three books in the series as audiobooks in 2017.
Gallagher Girls by Ally Carter- This was a series I randomly picked up in 2017 when I was looking for more books to listen to on audiobooks. I tend to really want to listen to series on audiobook because it gives me endless books to check out after I'm done with the current audio. I read the first 2 books in 2017 and I really enjoyed them.
Haven't Started, but Want to
The Blossom Street Series by Debbie Macomber- I will most likely start this series after I finish with Cedar Cove. I love Debbie Macomber and read several books about her per year.
Enchanted by Alethea Kontis- the series is complete and I hope to start it soon.
Princess Academy by Shannon Hale- this looks like another great series I will enjoy.
Queen of Hearts Saga by Colleen Oakes- this is an Alice in Wonderland retelling. The series is not compete, but would be a great one to start in 2017.
The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski- I own the first two books and the last one came out in 2016. I hope to start and finish the series.
Series I Finished in 2017
The Infernal Devices Trilogy by Cassandra Clare- I finished Clockwork Princess this year. I so enjoyed this series and my one last glimpse at Tessa's world. I think it was a great ending to the series.
Delirium Trilogy by Lauren Oliver- This series has been on the list for a long time. I listened to the first book towards the end of 2016. I read Pandemonium and Requiem through audiobook this year. The first book was by far the best in the series. I found Pandemonium to be boring and I didn't like the ending. Requiem redeemed the series and I did enjoy this book. I'm happy to have finished the series.
To All the Boys I Have Loved Before by Jenny Han- Another great trilogy by Jenny Han. I fell in love with the characters and really enjoyed getting to know Lara Jean and Kitty over the course of this series. I think it was a beautifully written series and has become one of my favorites.
Cedar Cove Series by Debbie Macomber- I only had one book to go in the Cedar Cove Series, but the series is complete. I finished the last book and it was a great ending to the series. I so love Debbie Macomber's books and this was a great series. I originally started reading it for the Hallmark Original series, but the show has since been canceled. I finished the series and I really enjoyed it.

COYER Week 5 Update
Since I last updated I deviated from the list. I have read If We Kiss and Kiss Me Again by Rachel Vail. I just finished Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally. The new year is off to a good start. I have not been reading much during the week, but have been reading a lot over the weekend. It was an extremely busy week last week at school since report cards were getting sent home. I'm glad to have them done and sent home.
I'm currently reading Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy by Karen Foxlee. This is a book I have wanted to read forever and I'm glad that I'm finally getting around to reading this book. I'm only about 30 pages in, but enjoying it so far.
COYER has switched so the list phase is over, so I will be starting a kindle book sometime this week. I have teacher in service tomorrow and a four day week of school. I have a lot of meetings in the next couple of weeks, but I don't have too many meetings left for the year and I'm glad about that.

2017 Deal Me In/Fill in the Gaps Update
Sign Up Hosted by Bibliophilopolis
At the beginning of 2015 I challenged myself to read 100 books in 5 years. If I complete 75 books the list is considered completed. You can view my original list here. Throughout the years I have crossed off many books on the list after I read them and I made a couple changes to the original list after trying to read the original book I set forth and not wanting to finish the book. I'm here do the end of the year tally to see how many books I have read. In 2015 I read 16 books off the list. In 2016 I read 15 books off the list. In 2017 I managed to read 11 books off the list. This puts me 4 books behind towards the 75 book goal, so I have some plans in 2018 to catch up on the list and complete the challenge. As I go through the list there are so many books on the list I do want to read they just get forgotten when there are so many new releases coming out. I have two years left to complete this list and I'm excited to make a new list and start another 5 years in 2020.
I do think what is different about this year is I have got rid of all the books I truly do not want to read. All 11 of these books were straight from the list. None were replacements for books I don't want to read.

Top Ten Tuesday: 2017 Releases I Meant to Read, but Haven't

I read 10 2017 releases in 2017, which is a high number of 2017 releases for me. Look for an update on my 2016 list and my 2013, 2014, and 2015 list.

December Wrap Up and January 2018 TBR
I'm probably not going to finish all of these books, but I'm excited to participate in the Biannual Bibliothon towards the end of the month. I'm currently halfway through If We Kiss by Rachel Vail and then I'm going to jump into the 2nd book.

2018 Reading Challenges
Hosted by The TBR Dare
I can't resist joining The TBR Dare. The goal of this challenge is to read books off your TBR List. I always try to limit the new releases I read until April. I currently have 402 books on my goodreads TBR. My goal is always to reduce this number throughout the year, but it always seems to grow.
Hosted by Bev @ My Reader's Block
I was disappointed to see that My Soul Called Life's blog had disappeared, but I'm glad to see My Reader's Block take over the challenge. This is my sixth year joining this challenge. The first year it took me until December 31st to complete. The 2nd year I finished 6 months. The 3rd year I finished 8 months. The 4th year I finished 8 months. The 5th year I finished 10 months. Now this year I'm back to try this challenge again. All the ideas come from my Goodreads TBR list.

The goal of this challenge is to read the books that you missed from 2017. As you know I do a post every January about the releases from the previous year that I missed, so this challenge is perfect. The goal is to read 12 books published in 2017. The challenge creator has a great list of books to get you started.

I'm so excited to join this challenge. The idea is to choose 5 releases per year for the past 5 years that you want to read, but didn't. For this year that would be 2013-2017. I'm so excited to have a challenge to help me complete those backlist reviews. My list will be revealed through my Top Ten Tuesday Posts of the Book Releases I Missed by Year and hopefully this will be a motivating way to complete books off those lists.
Hosted by Literary Escapism. This is the eigth year of this challenge. I'm totally up for reading another 25 new authors.
