Book to Movie Reading Challenge Wrap Up

Completed as of June 15th, 2013
1. The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
This one was a reread for me, but I thoughly enjoyed rereading the book and sitting down to watch the movie with new eyes. This is still one of my favorite books and favorite movies.
2. Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Once I got over the hype of Beautiful Creatures I realized this book wasn't as good as I thought it was. The movie was a huge disappointment and didn't follow the book very well.
3. Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks
An extremely emotional book and movie. I loved them both and became extremely attached to the characters.
4. Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
The children's classic was a delightful book especially the fun narrator. As always I love the Disney movie.
5. The Host by Stephenie Meyer
This was my biggest book of this year. I was never going to read this book, but when I heard it was being made into a movie I couldn't resist. I finished it a few days before we went to see the movie. The movie was great and followed the book very well. I love the actors they chose.
6. The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick
Who doesn't love Jennifer Lawerence as an actress? I couldn't resist this movie and book combo. Bradely Cooper and Jennifer Lawerence made a great book and movie cover. It was one of the more creative movie covers. I thought the book and movie were both a bit strange, but still really good.
7. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
City of Bones was an amazing book. I read it in five days and couldn't wait for the movie to come out in August. The movie didn't disappoint. They had a cast that played every character in the book great and I fell in love with the movie.
Although I didn't enjoy this book I enjoy the many retellings of Robin Hood.
9. Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult
Another great book by Jodi Picoult and what made it even better was reading it with a friend and discussing every aspect of the book. The movie is a lifetime movie and they did a great job capturing the book.
10. Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion
I was spetical about this book since I often don't like horror book, but this book was more of a love story than a zombie story. It was complex in so many ways. The movie was a bit more gruesome, but still had the right amount of love story and the actors did quite an amazing job.

There were so many great book to movies that came out this year. I can't wait to see what next year brings.

Thanks for reading

Book Review: Magic Hour by Kristin Hannah (no spoilers)

Book: Magic Hour
Author: Kristin Hannah
Publication: November 2007
Source: Local Library
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Summary (from Goodreads):

Until recently, Dr. Julia Cates was one of the preeminent child psychiatrists in the country, but a scandal shattered her confidence, ruined her career, and made her a media target. When she gets a desperate call from her estranged sister, Ellie, a police chief in their small western Washington hometown, she jumps at the chance to escape.

In Rain Valley, nothing much ever happens--until a girl emerges from the deep woods and walks into town. She is a victim unlike any Julia has ever seen: a child locked in a world of unimaginable fear and isolation. When word spreads of the "wild child" and the infamous doctor who is treating her, the media descend on Julia and once again her competence is challenged. State and federal authorities want to lock the girl away in an institution until an identification can be made. But to Julia, who has come to doubt her own ability, nothing is more important than saving the girl she now calls Alice. To heal this child, Julia will have to understand that she cannot work alone and must look to others--the people in the town she left long ago, the sister she barely knows, and Dr. Max Cerrasin, a handsome, private man with secrets of his own.

Then a shocking revelation forces Julia to risk everything to discover the truth about Alice. The ordeal that follows will test the limits of Julia's faith, forgiveness, and love, as she struggles to ascertain where Alice ultimately belongs.

In her most ambitious novel to date, Kristin Hannah delivers an incandescent story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the mysterious places in the heart where love lies waiting.
.

My Thoughts:
Magic Hour is about Dr. Julia Cates who has a shattered reputation after one of her patients murdered three people. Everybody blamed Julia and Julia began to blame herself for her patient's actions also. Her business as a physchiarist was dwindling until Julia got a call from her estranged sister, Ellie. Ellie told Julia she needed to come to Rain Valley without telling her the really reason Ellie needed her sister. Ellie who is a police officer found a girl in a tree with a wolf pup. The girl has suffered unimaginable trauma and does not speak or respond to her world. Julia is insecure and isn't sure she can help this girl. Magic Hour is all about finding yourself, learning to trust others, and surprises.

Magic Hour was a book that made me really think and wonder. Could there be people like Alice in the world? How is Julia going to get Alice to speak? Is there even a way to help Alice? I love children so at times it was hard for me to think about all the horrible things that had happened to poor little Alice to make her so afraid of our world. It also brought out another side of Julia when she was with Alice. The longer Julia was with Alice the more she let her professionalism go and she just started being Alice's friend. Julia softened up a lot during the novel and I loved that side of her that loves Alice.

Ellie was an awesome character. She has had three failed marriages so she is afraid of love. Ellie could be hard when she wanted to, but really the only thing she cared about was finding Alice's parents. Then there was Alice's doctor Max. He had also been scared by love, but apparently was the hottest man in town. He only had eyes for Julia through out the book. I really loved watching their complex relationship form. Julia wasn't ready for a relationship and even though Max seemed like he was I don't think he was.

Julia will have to jump through many hoops and have lots of patients to "cure" Alice. I think overall Julia discovered through Alice that her one patient who ruined her reputation wasn't the end of Julia's career. By the end of this novel I was incredibly attached to Alice, Ellie, and Julia that when something happened that upset their balance I was worried and scared for Alice. I let you read the novel for yourself to see what that event was. This novel was incredibly emotional as all of Kristin Hannah's novels are. I really enjoyed her creativity that she put into creating this novel's story. I was not ready to let these characters go when I finished the book and would highly recommend the novel.

Book Review: If I Stay by Gayle Forman (no spoilers)

Book: If I Stay
Author: Gayle Forman
Publication: April 6, 2010
Source: Local Library
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Summary: (from Goodreads)
On a day that started like any other,

Mia had everything: a loving family, a gorgeous, admiring boyfriend, and a bright future full of music and full of choices. In an instant, almost all of that is taken from her. Caught between life and death, between a happy past and an unknowable future, Mia spends one critical day contemplating the only decision she has left. It is the most important decision she'll ever make.

Simultaneously tragic and hopeful, this is a romantic, riveting, and ultimately uplifting story about memory, music, living, dying, loving.
.

My Thoughts:

I put off writing this review because I was busy so in doing that I have had time to reflect on the book, but also forget a little bit about the book. I loved If I Stay. Compared to Sisters in Sanity I related so much better to If I Stay and I think the writing was so much better in Gayle Forman's second novel.

Mia was a very emotional character. You could tell she put her whole self in her relationship and her music. She was willing to do what she needed to do to make both work. Mia has the decision to make whether she stays or she goes. I think this would be the hardest decision in the world to make because there are pros and cons to each situation. Mia handled it in a way that was realistic, but also very mature. Through the novel we continue to see how mature Mia is for a 17 year old.

Then there is Adam. Adam had a big part of the novel because through the flashbacks we got to see how Adam's relationship with Mia was formed and learn more about his past. I liked Adam I just didn't like the parts where Mia thought she needed to change to impress Adam.

I also really liked Willow and Kim as characters. Both characters had really strong personalities that were willing to fight to see Mia and help her get through this coma.

Overall If I Stay was a great book. I think it was emotional most of the times, but at times I had a hard time relating with the characters. The ending came really abruptly. When I looked at the pages I thought I had about 30 pages left. Only to find out later that those were just extra pages and I was done with the book. I had to read the ending a few times to really convince myself it was over with. I was happy with the ending Gayle Forman gave the book and it left a big cliff hanger for the second book, but I do wish that she spent a little bit more time explaining how the ending happened. If I Stay is a great novel and I can't wait to read the second novel.

The Gayle Forman Read Along If I Stay Week 4 Answers (spoilers included)

"Amazing things happen when you stop hiding behind that hulking beast." What is the significance of this statement that Mia is told at music camp? Are there any examples of her not hiding behind her cello that result in amazing things?

Mia had a point in the book where she thought about quitting the cello. She began to tell her friends and slowly stop practicing her cello. Her friends response was that she wasn't going to quit. She ended up not quoting.

Mia laments to her mom about the changes that are coming for her and Adam- college, musical success, moving- and her mom states that 17 is an inconvenient time to be in love. Do you agree? Disagree? Why?

17 is an inconvenient time to be in love. At 17 you are going through so many changes in your life as you begin to figure out your adult life and your future. Even when you are in college it is hard to balance relationships and school. It is always going to be hard to be in love, but it is especially hard when you are trying to figure out your life.

The last part of the book foreshadows Mia and Adam's future relationship. Do you think it's heading in a good direction?

I think Mia and Adam are going to face a lot of future challenges especially as Mia struggles through her grieve, but I think there relationship is in a good place and possibly strong enough to last.

What's been your favorite part thus far about this read-along?

I really have enjoyed reflecting on Gayle Forman's books as I continue to read through Gayle Forman books.

2013 Christmas Sprit and Christmas Readathon Sign Up

I love Christmas. That is something I haven't really shared on this blog yet is how much I love Christmas. About the end of September early October I started to get excited for Christmas. Once Hallmark starts their Christmas movies (which gets earlier and earlier every year) I begin to celebrate Christmas. That means watching endless amounts of Christmas movies, freaking out about all the cute Christmas decorations at the store, and listening to lots of Christmas music.

I love Christmas spirit. The feeling of magic in the air. Christmas brings people together and it gives people a chance to slow down and spend quality time with their family. People are also much more giving during the Christmas season.

I might be crazy for celebrating Christmas as long as I do, but I really do love this season. After Christmas ends I often find myself not quite as happy. I am always in a good mood at this time of year.

I usually start reading Christmas novels at the beginning of November, but I have held off this year because I need to finish my reading Challenges. I will start reading Christmas novels in early December. I'm signing up for Misteltoe 2-4 books.

I also will be participating in the Christmas Spirit Read-a-thon hosted on Season of Reading Blog. I will decide what I'm reading when the time comes.

Gayle Forman Read Along If I Stay Week 3 Answers (spoilers included)

There are several themes in If I Stay. Two that are very prevalent are sacrifice and choice. How do you think these themes affect the characters? Give an example of each and what you think about them (if you can).

Mia knows what she has to sacrifice either way that she decided to go. She would have to live on with out her family. She would have to die without Adam so either choice was full of sacrifice. Mia also had a choice. She could stay or she could go. I would never want to be in Mia's position and have to make that choice.

Although Mia’s family has died, Kim mentions that she still has a family. What does this mean to you? What does “family” mean in your opinion?

Kim believes that she is Mia's family that Adam, Willow, and Mia's grandparents are her family. These are the people that will help Mia through her grieve. Family is the people that care about you, but I think it would be hard to go on without my parents.

What does Adam's act of putting the headphones on Mia suggest about their relationship?

Adam and Mia's relationship is based on music. They both love music so his act of putting the headphones on Mia was his way of connecting to Mia although she was unconscious

Adam and Mia have an unconditional love. Could you make a case against this? What are some examples that you’ve read so far that could support this (if possible)?

Adam and Mia have a lot of love for each other. Mia is willing to give up Julliard for Adam. They are still teenagers and they are still both very selfish. They want to do what they want to do. Some changes are coming to their relationship since Mia's accident and Mia's grieve if she decides to stay will change their relationship a lot.

Has your opinion or initial thoughts about this book changed? If so, how?

I'm still loving this novel. I think Mia's character is so raw and real. I also still really like Adam's character because you can tell how much he cares and how terrified that he is to lose Mia.

Gayle Forman Read Along If I Stay Week 2 Answers (spoilers included)

Shortly after Kim arrives at the hospital, she goes to the hospital chapel to pray. How does this scene fit in with who she is?

Kim's family is Jewish, but Mia always says that she doesn't take her religion seriously  While Mia is a softy Kim is a strong woman. She was able to calm down her mom and she was able to be strong for Mia and Adam.

In the pages we've read Mia begins to realize that it's up to her if she wants to stay. What's hard about this decision? Based on what you know so far, talk about where you think she's at mentally and what her reaction to this knowledge might be.

I think it would be a very hard decision to stay or to go. She knows that if she comes back she has no family. She knows that if she leaves she leaves Adam, Kim, Willow, and her grandparents behind. I think Mia is freaking out a little bit about this knowledge because what if she doesn't make the right choice? If there even is a right choice.

Mia's parents are definitely different than she is. How do you think their personalities affect Mia?

Mia's parents choice in music is the thing that makes them the most different from her. That like Hard Rock while Mia plays the Cello. I also think that Mia's parents personalities really help Mia grow as a person. Although they may be different they are fine with living their lives the way they want to live their lives. I think Mia tries to take after that with her own life. It is okay to be different. I think that is a key theme in this novel.

The Halloween scene is one of my favorites- what do you think is significant about this particular scene in terms of Mia and Adam's relationship?

The Halloween scene was Mia's way of showing Adam that she can fit into his lifestyle although she doesn't always like his band's music. The Halloween scene also made me a little bit mad. Why should Mia have to change who she is for Adam? I like what Adam says at the end that This Mia is fine, but he likes the real Mia better. I think that was a major turning point in Mia and Adam's relationship.

Mia desperately wants Adam and Kim to be friends, but it's just not happening for them. Was it surprising to you to see Kim and Adam come together in the hospital? What are your thoughts on this?

Mia made such a big deal about Adam and Kim being friends and she even got mad at Kim when it didn't work out. People will do strange things for the people they love. Kim knew that she needed to bring Adam and Mia together. She did what it took to get Adam in to see Mia because she loves Mia. Yes, it was surprising to me, but  at the same time I know that worst enemies can be friends in time of need.

What was your initial reaction to the accident? Did you have an OMG moment?

The accident was so sudden that I had to reread a little bit to know what was going on. Then I was like oh no is everybody alright? I had to keep reading to find out.

Adam and Mia are about as oppossite as can be. Based on what you've read so far, what do you feel makes them such an intense couple?

So far there only thing in common is music, but they care about each other a lot. They both have very chill personalities which I think is a reason that they get along so well.

Mia is watching what is happening to her in the hospital. How do you think she is handling it? Do you think her reactions to everything are natural or is it something else?

I can take blood so I would have a hard time watching this happen something like this happen to myself. She seems to be handling it pretty well. I think she should probably be freaking out a little bit more, but she is taking everything in stride.

We're introduced to Mia's family before and after the accident, who is a group of varied individuals. Have you developed a favorite yet? If so why? What makes that person special to you?

I have so far really liked Teddy. He just seems really sweet and I hope he survives.

We ended this week's reading on one of the sexiest scenes ever. What was your reaction to this? Cigarette? Cold shower? Sneaking ahead to read more?

I definitely snuck ahead to read more because I could wait to find out what was going to happen next.
