I have to admit this post if perfect for me. Right now I'm in the middle of Redemption by Karen Kingsbury and I have just not enjoying this book. Why haven't I put it down? Why am I still reading the book if I'm not enjoying it?
I just read sweet green tangerine's post and she talked about how she puts down books that she doesn't enjoy a lot. I'm different. I have a really hard time abandoning a book. I always tell myself maybe it will get better, but usually if I don't like it halfway through I will end the book not liking. Books that I do not enjoy end up taking me much longer than books I enjoy. That is the hard part in this conversation. Why would I want to continue to read a book I don't enjoy if it takes so much time?
I believe the book deserves to be read once I have started reading it. The only time I don't mind quitting a book is if I am in the library and read the first few pages and just don't think I will like a book. I do that almost daily, but if I love the summary and check out the book I will usually force myself to finish it.
I'm going to ask you to please not bash me for the books I list below that I finished, but didn't like. We are all entitled to our opinion and we aren't all going to like certain books.
Books I have not like, but forced myself to finish
New Moon by Stephanie Meyer is my least favorite book and movie of the Twilight Saga. Anybody who knows me know that I love Twilight, but this book was quite a challenge to read. It just felt that there was nothing going on. I finished it so I could move on to Eclipse and Breaking Dawn which I loved.
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold was again a tough book to read and I don't remember much about the book. I saw that the movie was coming out and although it was different from what I usually read I decided to give it a try. It took me the entire summer to read and I just did not enjoy it. Again I felt like there wasn't much action and I couldn't get into the story line I have never seen the movie because I didn't like the book and didn't see the point.
Fine freak out on me that The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is going on this list. I read The Hunger Games February of 2012 in preparation for the March 2012 movie. Everybody loved this book and this was a book I deeply wanted to love also, but the fact of the matter is I didn't. I kept hoping and hoping for this book to get better and it never did. I had a really hard time getting past the morbid part of this book that their corrupt government was killing innocent children. I think if I could have got past how morbid this book is I probably would have liked it. I ended up really liking the movie and because I liked the movie because I like Jennifer Lawerence because I want to see the 2nd movie I'm going to give Catching Fire a try. I will probably read it in October 2013 to be prepared for the November 2013 movie.
I read this book Here Comes Trouble by Debbie Macomber this past December 2012. I just felt so blah about the characters in this book. I found myself not caring what happened to these characters. They were either together or they weren't. I didn't care which way it went. Luckily this book was short and only took me a few days.
Redemption by Karen Kingsbury is being added to the list. I had to force myself to finish this book and I ended up just scanning the last 100 pages. I didn't even care when some bad stuff happened to the characters. You can check out my rather negative review for this book. I would like to save other people the agony of reading this book.

The One Book that I have truly Abandoned
I started reading this book during my sophomore year in high school back when I was a two book reader. This book always took a back seat to all the other books I was reading and since I own the book I ended up putting it down and saying I would come back to it when I have time. It took me an entire semester to read 82 pages. Now I will have to reread those 82 pages. I haven't had time yet, but I do plan to come back to Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert since it is my nonfiction book for this quarter.
Thanks for Reading
Rachael
Hi :) Your chat topics are always very interesting but I rarely have the time to jump in ^^ Anyway, for your question today, I'm the same, I rarely abandon books, even if I don't like them. If I started something, I want to finish it - or else I just don't feel it would be fair to state I disliked them.
ReplyDeleteI drop books very very rarely. Sometimes it's because I just don't feel ready for them and I fear I won't to the justice - like The Name of the Rose. I tried reading it 5 years ago but gave up back then with the intention to restart it later :)
I totally agree. I usually big books that I believe I will enjoy and most of the time I really enjoy them other times I don't. I don't hit bad books all that often.
DeleteI'm the same way, I keep reading even though I'm wasting my time. Ugh, I need to stop! I can't believe you didn't like The Hunger Games, but I don't judge because everyone is different. I'm sure there are books I hate that others love. No biggie. =]
ReplyDeleteThis is the comment I was waiting for. I really wanted to like The Hunger Games I just didn't. I avoid talking about The Hunger Games often because I know a lot of people love the book and I didn't enjoy it. I haven't met a person in real life that disliked the book.
DeleteTrust me, I know what it's like to dislike a book that everyone else likes and it drives me nuts. (Ender's Game and Perks of Being a Wallflower, for example)
ReplyDeleteI liked the first half of Eat, Pray, Love, but I felt like it dragged in the middle for me. I wouldn't blame you for abandoning that one.
Thanks for linking up!
I love The Book Chat. I'm going to give Eat Pray Love one more chance. My sister didn't think I would like Perks of Being a Wallflower so I haven't read it.
Deletehaha we are SUCH opposites! Eat Pray Love was one of my favorite reads last year. But to be fair, I love to travel and I loved her witty writing and her travel memoir. It's definitely gotten mixed reviews so that's totally understandable.
ReplyDeleteLooking back, New Moon & Lovely Bones are two books I could have probably done without in my life, too!
New Moon was just the most dragging book of the twilight saga and one I don't sing my praises to at all. I am going to give Eat, Pray, Love one more try. Then after I finish I'm going to see about selling the book.
DeleteI watched about 10 minutes of Eat. Pray. Love. on a plane once and HATED it, so I never even tried the book. Glad to see I'm not missing anything! I did love The Lovely Bones, though, but I'm pretty morbid with my book choices.
ReplyDeleteI liked the movie of Eat, Pray, Love although it isn't my favorite movie by any means. I just had a hard time getting in and staying with the book since I had an unlimited time frame.
DeleteI'm with you on The Lovely Bones. I forced myself to finished(partially because my sister was reading it as well, and we hardly ever do the same thing/like the same thing, so I wanted to give it a try), and really wish I wouldn't have spent that time of my life reading it. It just. .. . didn't have much of a point for me? I felt it could have been a poignant and moving story but it always just kinda stayed on the surface.
ReplyDeleteI defiantly agree with you on that point. There could have been so much more to that book, but there was just nothing. My sister and I read a lot of the same books and it is fun to discuss them with her. While I have a reading list a mile high my sister always waits until she is finished with a book to pick out her next while I always know about the next five books I'm reading next.
DeleteThere were a few Lovely Bones responses today and I LOVED that book! It's funny how different things attract different readers :)
ReplyDeleteI think I want to give Eat. Pray. Love. a try because I did like the movie but I won't be too surprised if I can't get through it.
Anywho, always nice to see a new blog linking up for the book chat!! Hope to see you linking up next wekk :)

I have been linking up to it for a few weeks, but I think it is a fun chat. I will see about Eat Pray Love when I pick it up again probably in April.
DeleteI loved Hunger Games but didn't like the movie. I almost never see a movie if I've read the book but I heard such great things about the movie that I caved. Should have stuck with my SOP.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that you don't see the movies. I always love to see how the book looks on the big screen. I have discovered many of my favorite authors because they had one book made into a movie. The authors I love tab up top has the links to how I got started reading my favorite authors.
