Is There a Balance When It Comes to Reading?

I was looking through my Goodreads to read list to see how many authors were on my to read shelf that I had never read before. I entered two new to you author challenges this year so I need to read new authors. I got to think if there is ever a balance when it comes to reading.

How do you keep the balance between the authors you love and new authors?

February I read lots of authors I love, but I would like to read new authors in March. It is easier for me to pick up an author I love because I know I'm going to love the book. With new authors I have to take a chance so I end up reading authors I love more often.

How do you balance between short books and long books?

Sure long books are great you can start and be done with them in a couple of days. If you read short books you read more books, but are short book better than long books. Guilty as charged long books usually take me longer to get to because there is a bigger time commitment. Bigger books have something to offer that little books don't. More recently I read Beautiful Creatures and I loved it. It wouldn't have been the same story if it was a shorter book.

So is there a balance when it comes to reading? We all know we are never going to get through our to read shelves, but we hope to. In my opinion reading is a jumbled mess, but as long as you enjoy the books you are reading you have accomplished something today.

Thanks for reading and leave your opinion below.

  1. Hi, thanks for stopping by my blog.
Very interesting but I think I don't really look at the author when I pick a book. I usually go for the title and cover, but am trying to look a little at the summary before I consider reading it.
The author I've read the most is Nicholas Sparks, (if you consider 10 book from a series, Roswell High by Melinda Metz which I love, as a set) and if I see they make a movie about one of his books I'll read it. That's why I kept going back to his books and I do like his style. He is one of my favorite authors. I joined a Nicholas Sparks challenge so I'll be reading more books this year. But I read a lot of new authors, mainly because I pick what I see and like, not considering who wrote it.

I don't really read short books, I like series, I love when my favorite characters come back. In a short book I'll feel like we just met once and didn't get to know each other. That's why I re read books, I can't let them go lol.

    1. Sometimes people talk about reading lots of short books so it looks like they read a lot of books in one year. I prefer to read a variety of short and long books. I didn't even talk about balancing series and standalones. I sway towards the standalones, but I have challenged myself to read more series this year.

  2. Interesting. I just read everything from the authors I love and I mix that with new authors :) I don't pay a lot attention to what I read, more to "what will I love to read?" Reading is a passion and it's for fun, not something I want to think about too much :)

    1. That is so great. I'm definetly a what I want to read girl too. Sometimes I feel like books from series or standalones. I pick up the books I plan to read next usually on the author or a book that the summary really spoke to me.

  3. I really, really like this post! It's a great thought. Before blogging, I would basically reread the same authors and books over and over. Now that I'm blogging, I realized I haven't read my oh-so loved books and authors haven't been read through in a while. So yes, I think there should be a balance in authors/books. Long and short books? Well, I don't think it matters that much. If by short, you mean novellas, then eh, nah. I mean, go novellas and all, but except for a total of about 5, I don't read them. But if you mean by page numbers? I guess there COULD be a balance. I just read whatever is interesting. I might lean more towards the medium-length books than the longer ones, but I still enjoy them all the same (unless they're boring).

Once again, love the post. New follower! :)

    1. The problem I have found as a new blogger is now I'm challenging myself to read new books and new authors, but I still have books from my favorite authors that I have yet to read. I'm trying to create a balance instead of reading Nicholas Sparks books for months on end and boring my reades. Mostly you will see that I review older books because well I haven't read them and I use the library. Although I love the library it doesn't always open doors to reading new book right when they come out.
